The Institute is a much bigger conversation!
Back in 2016 we launched our business, Be Exceptional Consulting and Coaching to coincide with our presentation about Integrity in business at an entrepreneur’s conference held in Johannesburg, South Africa. In 2019 we both joined the business to work full time developing our clients and developing ourselves as leadership coaches to grow our business impact.
When 2020 rolled around we had no idea what a challenging and confronting year it would be for all of us. Lockdowns, travel restrictions, working from home, ZOOM meetings and all the while, a sense of uncertainty and anxiety loomed menacingly over the whole planet.
We took the opportunity during the first lockdown in WA to further develop our coaching skills and competency. We became part of the initial global cohort to be trained in coaching and debriefing clients with a new ontological tool: The Being Profile.
Last year was the first time in a long while, we had the time, and more importantly the mental space to think more deeply and ask ourselves and each other more profound questions. We began to look really hard at the bigger picture and the state of our world.
Not only are we now dealing with a global pandemic because a virus crossed from an animal to a human, serious health conditions such as cancer, cardiovascular disease and mental disorders like anxiety, depression, autism and dementia continue to rise globally. Additionally, climate change is starting to impact us, and, as predicted years ago, we are beginning to see more extreme weather events around the world.
Our Earth
What we also learned last year is just how depleted our soil is. Decades of industrialised agriculture has taken a toll, with the impact of chemical fertilisers, herbicides and pesticides and a poor understanding of soil biology coalescing. Modern agriculture practices now produce chemically contaminated food that is nutritionally deficient because of biology loss from the soil. It is no coincidence that the global use of chemicals and nutritionally deficient food correlates with poor physical and mental health. As the adage says, we are what we eat.
Collectively, we have lost our connection to nature, which our lives depend on. We can no longer afford to measure our progress solely using the economic bottom line. We urgently need to consider the social and environmental impact of what we do. After reading Regenerative Leadership, a seminal book by Giles Hutchins and Laura Storm published in 2019, we really got it is time for a new approach to leadership development. We are clear, the work for us to do is develop leaders who are committed to regenerating our planet.
We know regenerating our planet is really going to take something, so, in late 2020 we expanded our scope and formed the Institute of Regenerative Leadership. Now, everything we do is part of a much “bigger conversation.”
Our aim is to support individuals and organisations to regenerate their leadership development to have a positive global impact and create a simpler, cleaner and healthier world. A thriving world!
