A champion team will always beat a team of champions.

Most of us work in teams, and often we work in teams of teams. When we join the workforce, after years of formal education, what experience do we have working effectively in teams outside of our family? A sporting team is our most likely opportunity, and unless we made it to the top, our experience of exceptional teamwork will be infrequent at best. A team project at university may offer another chance, yet getting our fellow students to do their bit, let alone do it well is usually an exercise in frustration. While studying, we may work a part-time job and this is likely to give us our first taste of the very real consequences of poor teamwork.

We know the working world requires teamwork. Today, we hear that teams of people comprising a diversity of ideas and experiences is essential for success. While many of us may have an innate ability to work or play in teams, others, for various reasons, struggle with teamwork. How then do we transition from being an accomplished individual to flourishing while working effectively in a team or teams? The great news is that we all can develop our ability to work in teams, and perhaps more importantly, build effective teams. All it requires is effort, intention and willingness to learn.

As part of our training and development, we participated in a two-year Team, Management and Leadership Program. It was instrumental in us learning how to build and work effectively in teams. We discovered, self-awareness and confidence are essential. However, assertive communication is perhaps the most critical element to effectively build trust and engagement in teams. Learning humility, taking care of team members and how to communicate effectively was neither easy nor a comfortable journey.

Out of his participation in this two-year social entrepreneurial program, Bernard worked with the program Team Leader from Auckland, NZ. From one coaching conversation, the campaign, “BAN THE BAG” was implemented, and in July 2019 single-use plastic bags were eliminated in NZ. Many other countries have since followed NZ’s example, demonstrating the power of one critical coaching conversation causing exceptional outcomes in teams.

Our team building workshops and coaching are designed to leave you empowered and confident to build trust, master conflict, achieve commitment and engagement, embrace accountability and produce results.
